I-League Is Now the IFL — How India's Football Pyramid Actually Fits Together

The league that used to be India's top division isn't gone — it just changed its name and its level.

Quick Facts

Current tier: 2nd division — ISL sits above it, I-League 2 sits below2

2026-27 season: IFL kicks off 16 October 2026; ISL kicks off 10 October 20263,4

It's a rename, not a new league

If you've followed Indian football for a while, the I-League name probably means "the old top division" — and that's exactly right. The I-League launched in 2007 as the successor to the National Football League, and was India's top tier until the ISL was designated tier one under an AFC-approved roadmap starting 2019-20.2 The I-League itself was formally demoted to the second division ahead of the 2025-26 season.1

The rename came after that demotion, not before it. Club owners and the AIFF proposed the new name in January 2026, the AIFF Executive Committee approved "Indian Football League" on 12 February 2026, and the league unveiled its new logo on 26 February 2026 — all applying retroactively to the 2025-26 season.1,2 Star Cement came on as title sponsor for the rebranded league.2

The part that's genuinely new:

Alongside the name, the AIFF also announced a new ownership model for the league: participating clubs collectively hold 60%, the AIFF holds 10%, and a commercial partner holds 30% — though the AIFF keeps formal legal ownership of the competition.2 That's a real governance shift, not just a cosmetic rename.

How the pyramid actually connects

Here's the full ladder, top to bottom:

  • Tier 1 — Indian Super League (ISL). India's top division since 2019-20.2
  • Tier 2 — Indian Football League (IFL), formerly the I-League.1,2
  • Tier 3 — I-League 2, directly below the IFL.2
  • Below that — I-League 3 and various state leagues, feeding upward into the pyramid.2

Promotion and relegation link every level. The IFL champion can be promoted to the ISL, with no participation fee attached under the original roadmap.2 Between the IFL and I-League 2, full promotion-relegation came into effect from the 2024-25 season, ending an earlier setup where the two competitions ran in parallel without clubs moving between them.2 It's already produced real movement: Inter Kashi went up from the IFL to the ISL after 2024-25, while Diamond Harbour and Chanmari were promoted into the IFL for 2025-26, and Delhi and Sporting Bengaluru were relegated out of it.2

What's changing for the 2026-27 season

The IFL's 2026-27 season kicks off on 16 October 2026, under a new three-foreign-player cap in the starting XI.3 The ISL's 2026-27 season starts a week earlier, on 10 October 2026, in what's being called its first season under a new "club-led model" giving participating clubs a bigger role in shaping the league's direction. It returns to a full home-and-away format — every club plays every other club twice — with the league's points winner becoming the official Shield Winners/ISL Champion and claiming a spot in Asian club competition, while the top six go into playoffs for a separately-named ISL Cup Champion.4 That October 10 date supersedes an earlier September 4 date floated back in June 2026 — a reminder that Indian football's own season calendar keeps shifting even after it's "approved."

KickZone Take

The name change gets the headlines, but the ownership restructuring is the part that could matter more long-term — clubs holding a real stake in how the league is run is a different thing than clubs simply competing in it. Worth watching whether that 60/10/30 split actually changes decision-making, or stays symbolic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IFL the same competition as the old I-League?

Yes — same competition, continuous history, new name and new ownership structure. It isn't a separate new league.1,2

Can an IFL club actually reach the ISL by winning the league?

Yes. The IFL champion is eligible for promotion to the ISL, and this has already happened — Inter Kashi moved up after the 2024-25 season.2

What happened to the old I-League 2?

It's still there, as the third tier directly below the IFL, with its own promotion and relegation link to the IFL above it.2
