Why Super League Kerala Has No Draws
A 0-0 scoreline simply can't stay a 0-0 anymore — here's the rule, and why it exists.
League: Super League Kerala (SLK)
Sanctioned by: Kerala Football Association
Teams: 6 — Calicut, Forca Kochi, Kannur Warriors, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram Kombans, Thrissur Magic
Season 3 began: 25 September 2026
Promotion/relegation: None — SLK sits outside the national football pyramid1
How the no-draw rule actually works
Starting with Season 3, if a Super League Kerala match is still level after 90 minutes of regular play, it goes straight to a penalty shootout — no extra time, right in the league stage, for every single match on the calendar. Only the knockout playoffs still use extra time before penalties if a game's tied there.2 Either way, there's no "they shared the points" outcome anywhere in SLK anymore — someone leaves every match with a win.
The system is modelled directly on Japan's J-League. The idea is simple: when a draw is impossible, there's no incentive for a struggling side to just defend for a point and shut the game down — somebody has to actually go for the win, even if it ends up getting settled on penalties.2
The points breakdown
This is the part that trips people up, because it's not the standard football points system you already know from how the Premier League table works. In SLK, here's exactly how points are handed out2:
- Win in regulation time: 3 points
- Win on penalties: 2 points
- Loss on penalties: 1 point
- Loss in regulation time: 0 points
So a penalty shootout still splits something between the two sides — 2 and 1 — rather than nothing at all. It rewards getting to penalties over losing outright in 90 minutes, while still giving the shootout winner meaningfully more than the loser.
How this compares to the rest of Indian football
Nowhere else in Indian football works this way. The Indian Super League (ISL) — the country's top flight — uses standard 3-1-0 scoring with real draws allowed, same as almost every league in the world. SLK is a deliberate, regional experiment sitting entirely outside that system, which is also why it has no promotion or relegation tying it to the national pyramid.1
KickZone Take
Whatever you think of forcing a winner on every matchday, it's a genuinely interesting live experiment in incentive design — and worth knowing before you watch a Season 3 match end 0-0 after 90 minutes and wonder why the game isn't over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two teams draw in Super League Kerala?
No. Since Season 3, any match level after 90 minutes goes straight to a penalty shootout — there is no draw outcome anywhere in the competition.2
How many points does a penalty shootout winner get?
3 points for winning in regulation, or 2 points for winning on penalties. The shootout loser still gets 1 point, and only a loss in regular time earns 0.2
Is there promotion or relegation in SLK?
No — Super League Kerala operates independently of India's national football pyramid, with no promotion or relegation in or out.1
